Wellington School Leavers Scholarships 2024

The University's Tangiwai, Totoweka, Raukaraka, Pakohe, Kahurangi, Mana Pasifika and Kahotea scholarships have been developed to support and encourage school-leaver students who embody the key attributes of excellence, leadership and commitment to community. Six of the scholarship are named for a different type of pounamu (greenstone). Māori consider pounamu to be a taonga that can protect and act as a source of strength for those who possess it.

Please note: if you are applying for this scholarship, please DO NOT use your secondary school email address when creating your Community Force account. This means no email addresses ending in school.nz.

Eligible school-leaver students are encouraged to apply for a Wellington School Leaver Scholarship.  If successful, you will be allocated ONE of the following scholarships

Wellington Tangiwai Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Excellence

Tangiwai Scholarships for study in 2024 will be awarded competitively on the basis of academic excellence. Scholarships are valued at $5,000 or $10,000 for the first year of study which can be put towards accommodation costs at a University hall of residence, or as a stipend to contribute towards your first-year living costs.

Wellington Totoweka Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Equity and Support

Totoweka Scholarships for study in 2024 will be awarded competitively on the basis of academic merit, equity and commitment to community. Scholarships are valued at $5,000 or $10,000 for the first year of study which can be put towards accommodation costs at a University hall of residence, or as a stipend to contribute towards your first-year living costs.

Wellington Raukaraka Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Leadership


Raukaraka Scholarships for study in 2024 will be awarded competitively based on academic merit, leadership, and commitment to community. Scholarships are valued at $5,000 or $10,000 for the first year of study which can be put towards accommodation costs at a University hall of residence, or as a stipend to contribute towards your first-year living costs.

Wellington Pakohe Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Sustainability

Pakohe 
Scholarships for study in 2024 will be awarded competitively based on academic merit, demonstration of involvement in sustainability practices and commitment to community. Scholarships are valued at $5,000 or $10,000 for the first year of study which can be put towards accommodation costs at a University hall of residence, or as a stipend to contribute towards your first year living costs.

Wellington Kahurangi Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Exceptional Māori Students

The scholarship package includes full accommodation costs for the first year on the Marino Floor in Joan Stevens hall of residence, where tikanga Māori (Māori cultural practices) and te reo Māori (Māori language) are part of everyday life. There is dedicated pastoral support, plus $5,000 towards tuition fees in the second and third years of study. For students who are not in a hall, a $15,000 fees contribution can be taken evenly across three years.

Wellington Mana Pasifika Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Exceptional Pasifika Students

The scholarship package includes full accommodation costs for the first year in a University hall of residence. There is dedicated pastoral support, plus $5,000 towards tuition fees in the second and third years of study. For students who are not in a hall, a $15,000 fees contribution can be taken evenly across three years.

Wellington Kahotea Scholarship - School Leaver Scholarships for Outstanding Achievement

Kahotea Scholarships recognise students who have achieved exceptional academic results or other high achievement within the areas of culture, community involvement, leadership or equity. Awarded at up to $35,000, the Kahotea Scholarship package includes full accommodation costs at a University hall of residence in your first year plus a stipend for three years. All applicants that apply for a Tangiwai, Totoweka, Raukaraka, Pakohe, Kahurangi and/or Mana Pasifika Scholarship will automatically be considered for a Kahotea Scholarship.





Required Documents and References:


  • Totoweka, Raukaraka, Pakohe, Kahurangi & Mana Pasifika applicants are to submit a one-page personal statement explaining your reasons for wishing to attend Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington, the academic goals you hope to achieve and why you believe you deserve the scholarship. You should also include any leadership positions, details of your involvement in your school or community and outline your personal circumstances. Please include details relevant to all categories you are applying under. 
  • Those applying solely for Tangiwai do not need to provide a personal statement or reference. You will only need to provide additional information on your academic achievements.
  • Depending on the scholarship categories you are applying under, a letter of reference or an endorsement may be required. For those with International Baccalaureate qualification, your Indicative Score needs to be requested from your IB coordinator or teacher.

  • Your National Student Number (NSN) or equivalent codes for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and International Baccalaureate (IB).
