History or background of award

The late Dame Cheryll Sotheran was a founding CEO of Te Papa, which was celebrated its 20th Anniversary in February 2018. Te Papa has established two scholarships to honour both Dame Cheryll Sotheran, and his co-leader, the Kaihautu Cliff Whiting. These scholarships mark their legacies and make a vital contribution to research and training for the next generation.

Purpose of award

The Dame Cheryll Sotheran Memorial Scholarship will support a student to do a one-year full-time MA by thesis (worth 90 points or more) in Museum and Heritage Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.
